Ok, so I have become known for reading vampire books, but the more I read vampire novels, the more my taste in these books has developed and changed. I now classify vampire stories into different genres and I have learned which of these genres I like, and which I don't.
First, I don't like reading romance, I don't care if the hero is a vampire! (Sorry, Edward.) I didn't realize that before, but I have learned that I am not as into fairy tales as I once was. Maybe that just means I have grown up and don't feel the need for the fairy tale any more. A good real-life is much better. Or maybe the idea of biting just isn't my thing! ;)
Second, in order for me to enjoy any story, it needs a good mystery. Romance stories have ZERO mystery. You know the hero and heroine will fall in love and live happily ever after. You might not know how it will happen, but three pages into the story, even that usually becomes pretty clear.
Third, I might like vampires, but that doesn't mean I like gory descriptions of blood letting. I began reading the Christopher Pike "Thirst" series at the suggestion of a friend. The story line is really good - not boring romance - but it is GORY!! I mean I really don't need the detailed descriptions of the blood exchanges. Mention they exchanged blood and then move on already. I really don't need to know how it happened. It's not like I am going to need directions one day! To me, the details are just gross and I ended up stopping the books because they turned my stomach.
Lastly, I love humor. The more snide or sarcastic comments the author works in, the better. For example, my friend also let me borrow a book by Michele Bardsley which is hilarious. To illustrate, after having met vampires, werewolves, and a zombie, the heroine meets a fairy, to which she says "A fairy. Why the hell not?" I love it!
Let me splain...no there is too much, let me sum up: A vampire novel filled with mystery, that is short on the gore and high on the humor, is my cup of blood... uhh, tea. Luckily, I am not alone. Thank you Jim Butcher for Harry Dresden and Charlaine Harris for Sookie Stackhouse to name just two of my favorite blood-sucking, mystery-filled, sarcastically wonderful characters!
